Storytelling, Architecture, Technology, Experience: these are the keywords of TEA’s annual conference SATE, an international gathering dedicated to the creators of compelling places and experiences.” The common thread that unites us all is that we are story tellers,” said Disney Imagineer and conference co-chair Joe Rohde in opening this year’s conference, perfectly summing up the common goal that bings together so many different areas of expertise.
In the past decade, TEA widened its focus from the US to an international audience, and the 2012 SATE, on September 19th through to 21st, reflected this wider scope. Not only was the conference held in Disneyland Paris, thus being the first full-size event to be organized in Europe, but also its theme was a concession to the importance of a worldwide view:” Cultural Diversity in Creating Successful Guest Experiences:Obstacle or Opportunity?” To better explain the point, organizers presented it as follows:” Our industry operates within highly diverse cultural environments, from initial project concept right through the day to day operations. The clients, the creative team and, most important, the guests and visitors are often highly diverse in culture and background. SATE 2012 will explore and illuminate hey issues related to working in the diverse global market.”
Over 30 speakers participated in the presentations and round table sessions. Patrick Stalder(producer for various Olympic, Paralympic and Youth Olympic events)and Jean Christophe Canizares of ECA2(who produced The Big-O Project at Yeosu Expo 2012, Korea)were among the people discussing how to work within a multicultural environment or with a multicultural team, successfully blending the diverse talents and perspectives for the best possible guest outcomes and finding ways to better understand and communicate with each other. There were sessions that looked at specific experiences in a wide range of locales, from China-Disney Imagineer Bob Weis presented the creative portfolio of Shanghai Disney Resort and talked about Disney’s projects to raise a new generation of Chinese Imagineers to cross their creativiity with the western based ones; to Mexico-Martin Arnaud from Les Petits Francais talked about working with local authorities and performers to produce the Mexico Bicentennial Progect;to Qatar-Andrew McIntyre of Morris Hargreaves McIntyre presented plans for a children museum there and the difference in standard parent-children interaction; and to Hawaii-when Disney set out to design the Aulani resort, the team faced the challenge of how to define authenticity and proposes to address these questions through the inclusion of contemporary Native Hawaiian voices in its development, design, and operation.
In the end, it all comes down to understanding that different cultures can have different needs and expectations. Or, as TEApast president Keith James, CEO of Jack Rouse Associates, said during his session on the importance of continuously adapting the work process to better fit into a variety of local culyures and environments:” Listen first... especially if you are aAmerican.”
Although the event is marketed as a networking event, this year the focus was more on the seminars, and indeed the schedule was so tight that some delegates thought there was not enough time left to talk and network. Still, organizers did a good job of making everyone welcome and moderators did have a hand in allowing room for questions and an exchange of views. And when the conference was over, delegates has the chance to relax with a 2-day trip to Puy du Fou and Futuroscope, in a special group visit organized by TEA to 2 French parks that were honored with Thea Awards this year.
SATE will be back in September 2013 in a location in North America.Location and exact dates are to be announced in the near future.
